Samsung's Windows 8 ultrabook, tablet hybrids

Samsung has taken the wraps off a collection of Windows devices, including a Windows 8 ultrabook with a touch screen.

As part of its "Smart PC" strategy, the Korean electronics giant tonight unveiled its 13-inch Series 5 Ultra Touch Windows 8 ultrabook, which starts at $809.99 for a Core i3 and features a 1366x768 display, 4GB of RAM, and 500GB hard drive with 24 gigs of ExpressCache (high-speed SSD storage). An extra $50 gets buyers a Core i5 processor. However, at 3.83 pounds, it isn't likely to win the weight conscious.

Samsung also unveiled a pair of Windows 8 tablets with 11.6-inch displays -- the rebranded Ativ Smart PC 500T, which will retail for $749.99 with keyboard and $649.99 without keyboard, and the 700T, which will sell for $1,199.99. The 500T sports an Atom Z2760, 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage, while the 700T features a Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.
Retail availability was not revealed, but the devices will presumably be available when Windows 8 is released on October 26.

The tablet is powered by Qualcomm Technologies Inc’s SnapDragon processor and has been designed and developed by Karbonn in collaboration with Innominds Technologies – the USP of the tablet being its iCare content platform, which will provide education solutions and a platform for a comprehensive and collaborative platform for students and faculty.

“Karbonn Mobiles is envisioned to introduce innovative technology across the globe. The first variation of the table to be launched will be the Agnee L model, which is the most basic. The Agnee L will have a 7 inch display with a 4.0 Android OS – which the manufacturers say can be updated as and when Android updates. The table will have two cameras – in the front and at the rear. The front facing camera has a resolution of 1.3 MP front. The tablet will be priced below Rs 10,000.

Anil Katakam, Executive Vice President, Innominds Technologies said, “We have taken Qualcomm’s reference design and built it from scratch. This tablet is a collaboration between Innominds and Karbonn.””

Aside from iCare, the tablet’s content platform, which will support both rich text and HTML, the tablet will also support 22 Indian languages.

“This is not the 3G dongle enabled tablet – it’s 3G is both voice and data enabled tablet. It is going to be customised to the Indian experience in terms of the apps and experience. That’s what’s going to be different. Ours will also be the first tablet to support 22 Indian languages,” added Katakam.

The apps for the tablet will be broadly based on education, entertainment and general interests like newspapers, reading, usage and directory related services. And while some apps will be free of cost, many will have free trial periods which will eventually become paid apps.

Karbonn Mobiles plans to launch the product in the next three to four weeks – hoping to ride on the festive fever by aiming for a pre-Diwali release.

Razer Atlas - An Intel Core I7 Tablet

Bob Freking created a new tablet concept, the Razer Atlas, a 7 inch device with a Core i7 CPU, plus stylus, keyboard, mouse compatibility and phone features. The name Atlas comes from the Greek mythology character, the one who held the world on his back. He chose Razer, because it makes sexy devices, with top notch specs.

The Razer Atlas is a 7 inch Windows devices, with a Win RT version and a Win 8 version. So it can be selected in a Tegra version or core i3 to i7 version and it will have 4 GB of RAM, a 16 megapixel camera and a 7 inch 1080p HD screen. There’s also the option of associating keyboards and mice to it, plus the same S Pen that Samsung has. The price of the RT version is $800, while the maximum for the Windows 8 tablet is $1800, with Core i7 CPU and 4 GB of RAM.

That’s good enough to run games like Crysis or Portal easily, according to the designer Bob Freking. I see this as a desktop replacement and the definite laptop killer. It’s still too big to replace a phone and too little to play Crysis, if you ask me. 10 inches suit Windows 8 better, I think.

Apple's Next iPad will be a Rival Google Nexus 7 in terms of cost and size

The arguably high price tag of the Apple iPad has hardly been a detriment to the tablet’s wild popularity since its release, as Apple continues to enjoy a stranglehold over the tablet market.

Even still, Apple is rumored to have plans to release a smaller, and more wallet-friendly device designed to directly compete with the current 7-inch tablet market, including Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet.

This time around, the forthcoming iPad screen is expected to be standard definition, and between 7 and 8 inches, compared to the high-definition 9.7 inch version that’s currently available. While official specs and a release date have yet to be disclosed, consumers should be able to expect an announcement by early fall, and the new iPad by the end of the year.
